Critical consciousness

What Is It?

How Do We Use This Framework?

Why Is It Important?

Critical consciousness is the ability to recognize and analyze social, political, and economic injustices and take action to address them. It was developed by Brazilian educator and philosopher Paulo Freire as a framework to empower marginalized communities through education and activism.

At its core, critical consciousness involves three key components:

  1. Critical Reflection – Understanding the root causes of social issues, questioning power structures, and recognizing systemic inequities.
  2. Critical Motivation – Developing a sense of agency and belief that change is possible.
  3. Critical Action – Engaging in collective efforts to challenge and transform unjust systems.

Why Is It Important?

  • It helps individuals move beyond passive awareness to actively challenge oppression.
  • It fosters civic engagement, leadership, and advocacy in communities.
  • It empowers youth to see themselves as agents of change in their schools, communities, and beyond.

✔ Encourage students to analyze the social issues affecting their lives.

✔ Provide tools to express their perspectives through art and storytelling.

✔ Equip educators with strategies to create inclusive, student-centered learning environments.

By fostering critical consciousness from a trauma-informed perspective, we help young people recognize their power, challenge inequities, and build a more just and equitable future.
